HAIR AND EYEBROWS  RESTORATION

HAIR AND EYEBROWS  RESTORATION

We all want to be more self-confident and our appearance plays a major role in achieving that feeling. Throughout history, having voluminous and beautiful hair and eyebrows have helped to contribute to self-confidence.

20-30% of men will go bald and a higher percentage is in the process of losing their hair. Not only are men susceptible to losing their hair, but women are at risk as well and women complain of losing eyebrows.

REASONS WHY WE LOSE HAIR:

Losing 50 strands of hair on a daily basis is normal for people with a normal volume of hair. There are times when hair loss increases or decreases; for example, it’s normal to experience more hair loss in fall.

There are several reasons why we lose hair and eyebrows. Some are listed as below:

Vitamin deficiency, anemia, thyroid diseases, iron deficiency, blood circulation disorders, pregnancy and nursing, doing tattoos, fungal diseases of the skin and hair, chemotherapy, medication and physical distress (tightly pulling and braiding hair), or chemical treatments (coloring, bleaching,…), but the most common reason for hair loss is genetics, technically termed as “Androgenic Alopecia”.

Our bodies have a hormone called Testosterone which under the influence of an enzyme called “5a-Reductase” turns into “Dihydro Testosterone” (DHT). When DHT is produced, it affects the hair follicle and causes hair to fall.

Women start experiencing hair loss when there’s an imbalance between female and male hormones. Most often, there might not be a clinical or laboratorial sign that shows a high percentage of the male hormone (Androgen). In such a case, being overly sensitive to Androgen or having a high number of receptors in the hair follicles could cause hair to fall.

One of the most important causes of eyebrow hair loss in women is eyebrow tattooing.

From the point of view of a specialist MD, the different kinds of baldness, whether in men or women, can be successfully treated, and having an underlying disease (apart from immune system disorders), will not prevent you from being a candidate for hair restoration. However, it is crucial to treat such diseases before and after hair restoration.

WHAT IS HAIR RESTORATION?

Currently the only cure for hair loss is using natural hair restoration. Hair restoration can be used on different areas; such as the head, brows, beard, moustache, and scar areas.

Hair restoration was first brought up in 1939 by a Japanese doctor, Dr. Okuda, and later, in 1959, was put into practice by a German doctor, Dr. Orientreich.

Throughout the years, different methods were experimented and finally, today, with the help of the latest technology, the tiniest fraction of hair is being used, bringing out a natural and satisfactory look.

An idea that not too long ago seemed difficult to conceive has today become a very light and minor surgery that consists of removing the healthy hair roots of the patient and restoring them on various desired areas.

Hair follicles on different areas of the scalp do not react equally to Androgenic (Hormonal-Genetic) factors. Hair on the front and the middle of the scalp and vertex are sensitive to Androgenic factors and causes hair loss. However, hair on the back and sides of the head show high resistance to those factors and therefore there’s less hair loss on those areas. Hair restoration uses the hair follicle taken from the resistant areas (back and sides) and restores them on the less resistant areas (front and middle). Therefore the follicle is not only natural but will also remain for a lifetime, and remains resistant, as well.

Taking into consideration that hair follicles from every area of the skin has the potential to grow, restoration can easily and successfully be done on different areas of the skin, such as the head, brows, beard, moustache and even scar areas from wounds or burns. Fortunately, the new hair doesn’t need any specific medical or non medical care; they remain for a lifetime and can be cleaned, styled and cut like the rest of the hair.

In the past, the size of the graft were big, so the restored hair looked doll-like and unnatural, but today restoration is done with such precision, and follows the natural style of hair growth (of women and men) that even experienced hair stylists  will not notice the restored hair.

Hair restoration is done by an experienced and professional team that has gained expertise in the procedure for a while; uses the latest method and facilities available in the world, and is done under completely sterile and hygienic conditions. Local anesthesia is also done so not only the patient doesn’t experience any pain but remain conscious, if requested, throughout the whole process.

Hair and Eyebrow Restoration Methods:

The latest natural hair restorations are as follows:

  1. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
  2. FIT  ( Follicular Unit isolation Transplantation)
  3. Combination Method FIT + FUT

FUT Method

FUT is one of the most secure methods of natural hair and eyebrows implantation. It is better to use only this method for eyebrow implantation, because it gives much better results. With this method, there’s no need to shave all the head before the procedure but only the area of the restoration needs to be shaved ( except for eyebrow implantation). The stages of the method are elaborated below:

After applying local anesthesia and under sterile conditions, first a thin line of skin containing lots of hair from the back and sides of the head (“Donor areas”) will be taken. The width of the thin line depends on the looseness of the skin.

At the end, the area that has been removed will be sutured with a special technique and with high precision. This suture is usually removed within 12-14 days. It is to be noted that because of the special technique used in the suturing, the scar area caused by the procedure will only like a delicate, thin line disappearing in between the hair and is not noticeable.

The line of the skin will be divided into smaller parts by several expert assistants, using the latest facilities, and is done with precision. The dividing process is done in such a way that the follicles on the thin line of skin do not get damaged in any way.

These sections will also be divided into smaller parts and finally each section will contain 1-4 follicles of hair termed as Follicular Unit or Graft. Each of the grafts is used in the certain areas of the restoration. It’s to be noted that all the grafts can and will be restored. Using the latest knowledge in sketching a hairline, and with the consent of the patient, the hairline is restored with such precision that after growth it portrays a very natural look. The hairline is restored with consideration to the variant styles of growth in men and women.

With the use of the latest and most precise technology, the area of the restoration of each graft is very tiny and shallow and is only a superficial puncture caused by a small needle pierced into the skin. This stage needs a lot of knowledge and experience.

In the end, after all the implanted grafts have been controlled, the area will be bandaged. They can be removed after 24-48 hours by the doctor and no more bandaging will be necessary. All the above mentioned stages take between 5-7 hours, throughout which the patient is alert and does not feel any pain.

2.  FIT Method

FIT is one of the best natural restoration methods. The difference between FIT and FUT is in the way the follicles are removed from the “Donor area”, but the remaining stages are the same.

In this method, local anesthesia is applied and under sterile conditions, the follicles are removed with special tools having a width of less than 1mm and placed into the hair loss area.

With all the above mentioned explanations, you might ask which method is better- FIT or FUT? Both methods are considered as one of the best methods of natural hair restoration and each have their own advantages and disadvantages which will be elaborated below:

THE ADVANTAGES OF FIT OVER FUT:

  1. No bandaging is necessary in FIT because the removal process is done sporadically and the wound heals in a week. This is not the case in FUT.
  2. Since the removal process in FIT is done from various areas, it can be done in variant sessions so more graft can be removed.
  3. In FIT, hair follicles can not only be removed from the head, but also from the other areas, such as the chest, back, hands and feet. This is termed as BHT (Body Hair Transplantation).

DISADVANTAGES OF FIT OVER FUT

  1. In FIT, the follicles are not surgically removed, so when the grafts are removed, the roots are not visible, putting the follicles at risk of getting damaged. About 20% of the restored grafts won’t grow. But in FUT, 100% of hair has growth potential.
  2. In FIT, all the hair on the head should be shaved, but in FUT only the area of the restoration needs to be shaved (except for eyebrow implantation).
  3. FUT takes 7-10 hours; FIT only takes 5-7 hours.

To achieve a natural hair line, it’s best to follow the FUT method. FIT is best for candidates with the following attributes:

  • People who have tried FUT once or several times before and would now want a more voluminous look on the restored area.
  • People who have a weak hair bank (The “Donor area”), or cannot use FUT more than once, will have to use hair from not only the head, but also from the chest, back, hands and feet (BHT).
  • People who choose not to do FUT for their own personal reasons
  • People who would like to use the combination method (FIT + FUT) to get better results.

3 The Combination Method: (FIT +FUT)

This is considered to be the best natural hair restoration method. It is a mixture of both of the methods FIT and FUT and currently only a handful of centers do the combination method. Using this method, you can simultaneously follow FIT and FUT in one day, resulting in not only a natural hairline, but more grafts can be removed resulting in more voluminous hair and naturally more coverage. Whether you are a good candidate for this method can be discussed with the doctor.

The patient’s condition after the restoration:

In FUT, after the restoration, the patient feels a slight tingle and pain around the back of the head, which can be easily soothed with analgesics. There might be some slight feeling of numbness for a while, but it will fade through time. In FIT, after the restoration, the patient will only feel slight pain in the “Donor area”, which again can be easily soothed with analgesics. With both methods, there will be a numb feeling for several days which will go away after a while.

POST SURGERY RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Use of antibiotics and analgesics prescribed by the doctor.
  2. It is not necessary to rest after surgery, but it is recommended to rest at home for a day and not to do any heavy activity for 3 weeks.
  3. It is best to sleep slightly raised for 2-3 nights after the surgery and not to put any pressure on the restored area or play around with it.
  4. Refer to the doctor after 24-48 hours to remove the bandages and check the grafts.
  5. The patient can take a shower following the day of the surgery as instructed by the doctor. The method has to be used for 2 weeks.
  6. With FUT, the patient has to refer to the doctor after 12-14 days to remove the sutures on the back of the head.

HOW THE RESTORED GRAFTS GROW:

The restored grafts grow from the very beginning, but the stems of all the grafts, as well as a few of the hair on the restored area will start to fall temporarily, in the first month, because of the shock. From 3-8 months of the restoration, all the grafts will gradually start to grow and the final result can be seen within a year.
